Body Treatment FAQ

What is a Body Scrub?
A Blissful Body Scrub at Lotus Organics consists of a dry brushing to loosen dead skin, followed by an organic sugar scrub massaged into the skin. It is removed by warm spa towels, after which a hydrating oil is massaged into the skin.

Do I need to wear a bathing suit?
No. Clients receiving a body treatment will be fully draped except for the area being worked on. It is advised to undress fully, or at least to your comfort level, so that as much of the body can be addressed as possible. Intimate areas are 100% covered and untouched; the abdominal area is optional. No showers are utilized in this treatment at Lotus Organics, but will be provided with extra towels at the end of the service to remove any small traces of lingering sugar scrub before getting dressed.

Facial FAQ

What is a facial?
A facial is a professional skincare treatment that focuses on deep cleansing, exfoliating, and hydrating the skin. Some facials may include extractions, which is gently removing blackheads or debris trapped within the pores. Different treatments at Lotus Organics may also offer brief massage of the face, decollete, neck, shoulders, scalp, arms, and hands.

Are extractions done in every facial?
The skin will be assessed by the Esthetician to determine whether or not extractions need to be performed. They are not always necessary in every facial, and it may not always be beneficial to extract the pores. If the need for extractions is indicated, they may be performed. However, even when indicated, skin that is overly dry, broken, or already irritated will not receive extractions due to the fact that it can cause injury or further irritation to the skin. Regardless of the need for extractions, the client may always request for no extractions to be performed.

What does a facial feel like?
Facials at Lotus Organics focus on relaxation as much as they focus on the health of the skin. Clients state that it feels more like a massage as the majority of the products are massaged into the skin. With many of the products used being as natural and organic as possible, treatments should feel very gentle and soothing and should not burn or itch. Products applied to the skin will be removed with either warm sponges or warm spa towels. You should feel relaxed and well hydrated at the end of the treatment.

Must I completely undress?
Most clients remove their shoes for comfort, as well as everything from the waist up so that the decollete and shoulders can be massaged, and also to avoid getting product or water on clothing. You will be provided with a spa wrap that wraps around the chest to offer a feeling of security. The Esthetician will leave the room as the client disrobes to their comfort level, and will then relax under a top sheet and blanket for the duration of the treatment.

Is everything used in facials organic?
At Lotus Organics, it has always been the goal to bring the client products and services that are as natural and organic as possible. Over the years, rising costs have made it more difficult to obtain 100% organic and natural products. In an effort to keep prices affordable for both the client and the Esthetician, some products may contain a healthy mixture of organic, natural, and some synthetic ingredients. However, please note that thorough research and personal testing are done prior to bringing any product into Lotus Organics. No known harmful or irritating ingredients are used at Lotus Organics!

I want my wrinkles and sun damage to go away, how many facials will I need?
While it would be lovely to have a magic wand to make skin issues disappear overnight, unfortunately it takes longer than that, and even more so with natural and organic ingredients. When working with natural ingredients, consistency is key. Much like a healthy weight loss program, slow and steady is best for long-term results. Therefore, it is impossible to say how many facials will correct an ongoing skin problem. For extreme results or those wishing to see improvement faster, intervention from a Med Spa or Dermatology office my be better suited. Regardless of the client's chosen path of skincare, proper at-home care paired with regular facials will directly determine one's results.

Do facials help with severe acne?
Many facials can help with severe acne! At Lotus Organics, the majority of treatments are focused on hydration, which - believe it or not - is absolutely necessary even for acneic skin. For more severe cases of acne, the client may require referral to a Dermatologist for further intervention. However, the Esthetician at Lotus Organics can most certainly analyze the skin and determine whether or not the natural/organic skincare path is best for your skin. Often, proper education and hydration is all that's missing from your routine. Consider a consultation with initial skincare treatment to determine the best plan for you!

What might I experience after a facial?
One should feel relaxed and refreshed after a facial at Lotus Organics. Clients may notice more oil output following a skincare treatment. This is completely normal and healthy, and is due to the increased circulation and products used during the facial. Occasionally, one may experience an increase in breakouts following a facial. This is also normal and is a result of trapped dirt and bacteria being released during the facial and working its way out of the skin. This should subside within a couple of weeks. Depending on the client's skin type and potential use of certain enzymes, sometimes there may be a slight bit of skin peeling or "frosting", which is also normal, but you should notify the Esthetician so that future treatments can be adjusted. Clients should not experience any itching, hives, blisters, or cystic-type breakouts after a facial. If you do, contact your Esthetician immediately so that potential allergens can be documented and you can be referred to the appropriate medical professionals for further treatment if needed.

How often should I get a facial?
With proper at-home skincare, facials are recommended every 4 to 6 weeks for thorough deep cleansing, exfoliation, and nourishment. If not using proper at-home care, facials will be needed more often, and may not benefit the skin as much. Note that by going beyond 6 weeks in between facials and/or not caring for the skin properly at home, treatments will solely be for relaxation and may not benefit you long-term. Regular skincare at home and with a professional are the best ways to achieve healthy skin.

What should I do to maintain healthy skin at home?
Bare minimum, everybody should use a cleanser and moisturizer formulated specifically for the face, morning and night. Once a week, it is beneficial to gently exfoliate the skin to ensure that dead skin is not getting trapped on the surface. Optionally, a once a week or bi-weekly facial mask is also helpful when it comes to achieving results. Talk to your Esthetician regarding products that might be best for your at-home skincare routine.

What's the difference between professional products and non-professional products?
Professional products are often formulated with smaller molecules, helping them absorb deeper into the skin faster. They are also generally concocted with no or significantly less fillers and preservatives, and any that may still be present are normally healthier than what you will find in over-the-counter products on the grocery store shelf. You will find that because of the higher quality ingredients in professional products, you will actually use less product - giving you more for your money - and can achieve better results over time.

Do I have to purchase my product from Lotus Organics?
You do not have to, however please note that it is imperative that you are 100% honest with the Esthetician when it comes to what you are using on your skin. Please notify the Esthetician of every product, including brand name, that you are using. Failure to do so may result in injury to the skin due to product interaction or over-exfoliation, and/or the inability for the therapist to offer helpful skincare advice. As an element of safety for both the client and the business, the Esthetician reserves the right to discontinue treatments at any time if the client shows dishonesty in product usage or if the client chooses not to follow the Esthetician's recommendations.

I purchased good product to use at home, so are facials still necessary?
While never 100% necessary, facials can be 100% beneficial to anyone with skin! Very rarely does the average person take the time to perform all steps in a proper skincare routine at home. Facials will provide the client with steaming to better open the pores, customized methods of exfoliation, proper and safe extractions, circulatory massage, and nourishing masks and serums that the majority of people do not invest in for at-home use.

Massage FAQ

Where will my massage session take place?
Your massage session will take place in a private, comfortable, quiet room. Soft music will be played to help you relax. You will lie on a fully adjustable heated table especially designed for your comfort. Temperature and music may be customized to your preference.

Must I be completely undressed?
Most massage techniques are traditionally performed with the client unclothed; however, it is entirely up to you what you want to wear. You should undress only to your level of comfort. While undergarments are fully optional, private areas will always be fully and securely draped during the entire session. Note that if you choose to keep certain articles of clothing on (i.e. sports bra, high-waisted undergarments, boxer briefs, socks, etc.), the areas covered by the clothing may not be able to be fully addressed in the massage.

Will the practitioner be present when I disrobe?
The practitioner will leave the room while you undress, relax onto the table, and cover yourself with the provided sheet and blanket.

Will I be covered during the session?
You will be properly and securely draped at all times to keep you warm and comfortable. Only the area being worked on will be exposed.

What parts of my body will be massaged?
A typical full-body session will include work on your back, arms, legs, feet, hands, head, neck, and shoulders. However, if requested, the therapist can omit any of these areas and work more specifically on just the main area of concern. Lotus Organics does not currently provide abdominal or bust massage or any internal mouth massage (i.e. TMJ massage).

What will the massage feel like?
A relaxing Swedish massage is often a baseline for clients. In a general all-over relaxation massage, your session may start with broad, flowing strokes that will help calm your nervous system and relax exterior muscle tension. As your body becomes relaxed, pressure will gradually be increased to relax specific areas and relieve muscular tension. A light oil is used to allow your muscles to be massaged without causing excessive friction to the skin. The oil also helps hydrate your skin. You should communicate immediately if you feel any discomfort so that another approach may be taken. Massage is most effective when your body is not resisting. You should feel relaxed and relieved during and following a massage, not excessively sore. Always communicate with the therapist during the massage to find the perfect amount of pressure for your body. If you are overly sore after a massage, lighter and more gradual work should be done in future sessions. Make sure to inform the therapist if this occurs.

Are there different kinds of massage therapy?
There are numerous types of massage. At Lotus Organics, the main focus is relaxation for pain reduction, with some deeper techniques often incorporated for more specific muscular concerns. We can discuss which methods may be most appropriate for you.

What should I do during the massage session?
Prior to the massage, feel free to ask the practitioner any questions about the technique or the upcoming session. During the massage, RELAX - make yourself comfortable. The practitioner will either gently move you or tell you what is needed throughout the session (such as lifting your arm). Many people just close their eyes and completely relax, communicating if/when they need more or less pressure, another blanket, or anything else relevant to the session. If you have any questions regarding the session or about the particular technique you are receiving, feel free to ask.

What are the benefits of massage therapy?
Massage can help release chronic muscular tension and pain, improve circulation, increase joint flexibility, reduce mental and physical fatigue and stress, promote faster healing of injured muscular tissue, improve posture, and reduce blood pressure. Massage is also known to promote better sleep, improve concentration, reduce anxiety and create an overall sense of well-being.

Are there any medical conditions that would make massage inadvisable?
Yes. That's why it's imperative that, before you begin your session, the practitioner asks general health questions. It is very important that you inform the practitioner of any health problems or medications you are taking. If you are under a doctor's care, it is strongly advised that you receive a written recommendation for massage or bodywork prior to any session. Depending on the condition, approval from your doctor may be required.

Waxing FAQ

What type of wax is used?
For ideal comfort, safety, and results, Lotus Organics uses only hard wax, which works by "shrink wrapping" the hair so it can be easier removed by the root. Hard wax also does not adhere to the skin like other soft waxes can, so is less traumatizing to the skin and continues to be the safest option for most clients.

I'm on my period; can I still be waxed?
Absolutely! There is no need to reschedule if you are on your period. Simply make sure to cleanse well before coming to your appointment, and please use the restroom prior to the wax to insert a fresh tampon or menstrual cup. Feminine wipes will be provided in the treatment room for additional cleansing prior to the start of the service. You may also wish to take a pain reliever at least 45 minutes before arrival. Please note that menstruation is not an excusable reason to cancel an appointment after the 48 hour window. If you are not comfortable being waxed while on your period, please plan accordingly and do not schedule an appointment during the time that your menstruation is due.

Is there anything that would make waxing inadvisable?
Yes. While your Esthetician is trained, licensed, and experienced, there are still various circumstances in which the service should not be performed. Certain medications, supplements, and topical products are contraindicated, meaning that they pose a safety concern due to how they may cause the skin to react with waxing. Some of these include but are not limited to: retinols and retinoids, steroids, antibiotics, strong enzymes and exfoliants used too often or too close to a waxing appointment, internal or external acne medications (prescription and over-the-counter), and more. There are also certain medical conditions and/or injuries that will make waxing unsafe to receive. It is the client's responsibility to honestly and regularly inform the Esthetician of any and all products used, medications and supplements taken, and any medical issues. Failure to honestly communicate these details may result in serious injury to the skin, as well as future appointments being terminated. By scheduling with Lotus Organics and signing all required forms and waivers, the client releases the Esthetician from any liability of any adverse reactions during and after the service(s).

How long does hair have to be to wax?
For body hair, the general rule of thumb is that the hair should be a minimum of 1/4" long, and you should be able to easily grasp the hair with the pads of your fingers (not the fingernail). If you cannot easily grasp the hair, neither can the wax, so you will need to wait a little longer. For facial hair, the hair should be clearly visible and also easy to grasp, but may be okay if it is slightly shorter than 1/4". Please check your growth progress no less than 3 days prior to your scheduled wax so you can reschedule before the 48 hour cancelation window!

Can I shave or tweeze between appointments?
It is imperative that if you wish to stay on a proper waxing schedule for the ideal long-term results, the you should never shave or tweeze any hair between appointments. Doing so will disrupt the growth pattern and result in uneven wax results, and potentially broken hairs.

How should I prepare for my wax?
Clients should gently exfoliate the skin 48 hours prior to waxing to ensure that dead skin cells will not interfere with the ability of the wax to adhere to the hair. It is often helpful to take a pain reliever at least 45 minutes prior to the wax. Please arrive hygienically prepared for your session.

How should I care for my skin after being waxed?
Aftercare is actually the most important part of the treatment. Once waxed, the skin and hair follicles are wide open to all bacteria and anything that comes into contact with the skin. For this reason, it is imperative that the skin stay as clean as possible, especially within the first few days following a wax. Avoid hot water and submerging the body in a bath, hot tub, or pool for at least 48 hours. Avoid sexual activity for at least 48 hours. Avoid direct sun exposure for at least 48 hours. Cleanse gently and regularly with an antibacterial or fragrance-free feminine wash. You might wish to carry some alcohol-free witch hazel with you for on-the-go cleansing. Clients should also exfoliate one to two times a week to prevent dead skin cells from blocking hair follicles and causing ingrown hairs. Moisturize daily and after every cleansing and exfoliation to keep the skin at its healthiest. If you struggle with ingrowns, speak to your Esthetician about recommended products and protocols.

Why am I already seeing hair growth after I just got waxed?
Hair grows in multiple stages, and while all visible and accessible hair may be removed by the root during your wax, there are likely hairs that we cannot see or feel that are just below the surface of the skin. These can then emerge shortly after your wax. The more you are able to stay on a strict waxing schedule (4 to 6 weeks as determined by your Esthetician), the sooner the growth phases will slow down so that eventually all or most of the hairs can be waxed at the same time, giving you longer results in between waxes. Shaving, tweezing, and waxing too soon will interrupt the natural growth cycles and can result in unwanted results including but not limited to broken hairs, ingrowns, irritation, and faster regrowth.

Why do I keep getting ingrown hairs and/or breakouts?
There are many reasons that this can happen: Genetics. Hormones. Using at-home products that aren't suited for your skin type. Using too many or not enough of the right products. Wearing tight clothing. Sweating. Friction. Not cleaning well enough or often enough. Not moisturizing frequently enough. Not exfoliating properly. Waxing and/or exfoliating too frequently. Shaving in between waxes. And many other reasons... If you are experiencing issues, speak with your Esthetician for recommendations. If you continue to have issues, the Esthetician may refer you to a Dermatologist or a Med Spa technician for more invasive intervention to correct the problem, at which time waxing sessions may be put on hold.

Why is my skin turning darker after waxing?
Hyperpigmentation can be caused by several factors, including ethnicity and skin type (darker skin is more prone), hormones, friction, and product usage. Many people experience hyperpigmentation in the bikini/Brazilian area and underarms due to friction, in which case loose-fitting cotton clothing is advised, as well as a light application of a body powder to absorb excess moisture and prevent skin from rubbing. It is actually recommended by many gynecologists to not wear undergarments to better allow the area to "breathe". Overuse of certain exfoliating products can also lead to hyperpigmentation, as the skin will produce excess melanin as a protective response to increased inflammation caused by excessive removal of healthy skin. Some ingredients also may contribute to darkening the skin; baking soda is a common culprit. If you are experiencing darkening of the skin, reach out to your Esthetician for guidance.

Someone else suggested a certain product for aftercare, can I use it instead of your recommendation?
In this day and age of social media DIYers and influencers, it can be overwhelming with all of the suggestions of what to use for aftercare, and it may be tempting to try them all. However, please trust the experience of your Esthetician and consider their recommendations before exploring other options. Many influencers are not educated or licensed in waxing or skincare, and are often promoting products solely for financial gain. Also, what works on their skin may not work on yours. It is best to follow the recommendation of licensed professionals with experience in the field. Note that it can take up to 3 months of consistent and proper use to see results. If you wish to stray from your Esthetician's recommendations, you absolutely must be 100% honest at all times with what products are being used and how often. Failure to do so may result in serious injury and adverse reactions. By choosing to use different aftercare protocols than recommended, you as the client are accepting the responsibility and liability of any reactions or negative results that may occur, and agree not to hold the business or the Esthetician at fault. The Esthetician may choose to discontinue future services if it appears that it may do more harm than good.
